California June 2016 Propositions

There's only one statewide proposition on this ballot and it's uncontroversial. There's also a regional measure for the nine Bay Area counties that's worth talking about.

Election Day is Tuesday, June 7th. You can also vote before then at Early Voting locations. Check your sample ballot, or ask your county's Registrar of Voters to find out where. For instance, in Alameda County you can vote at the Registrar's office in downtown Oakland, among other places.

YES Prop. 50: Suspending Legislators constitutional amendment
Currently, the state constitution gives legslators the power to expel members, but not to suspend them. This proved embarassing during the trial of Leland Yee for, among other things, gun-running. They suspended him, or so they thought, but without any authority to back up the suspension he continued to draw his salary! There have been other similar cases. Proposition 50 is a constitutional amendment that adds the actual authority to suspend members, including their pay and benefits. Sure, why not.

YES Measure AA: San Francisco Bay Restoration Authority parcel tax
This adds a $12/year flat parcel tax for the next 20 years, for maintaining and improving the San Francisco Bay shoreline. It will raise about $25 million per year, $500 million for the length of the tax. Like all new taxes post-Prop. 13 this requires a 2/3rds majority to pass. That's 2/3rds for the whole region totalled together, not 2/3rds in each of the nine counties.
