This kinda reminded me of Effinger's "When Gravity Fails" at first,
with the involuntary brain-implant fu.
But that's just the very start.
It accelerates through alien contact and multinational corp takeover wars
and genetic optimization and tectonic catastrophes and just keeps getting
bigger and faster until it ends with a "to be continued".
